Vena Virago
VCA

Where I am from, there are many lakes, but no "silverlakes". And, even though I have been to California, I have never been to this place called Silverlake. However, recently, I had the fortune, while perusing the "Love Boutique" of a strip club, to stumble across Vena Virago's film, "Silverlake Scenesters." Having read about this film and having talked to Vena Virago thru email, I was delighted to see a real live copy. I bought it.

The film is shot as a documentary (or mockumentary) about the "scenesters" of Silverlake, CA. One thing that I can deduce about the "scenesters" of Silverlake is that they like to fuck (note: these cats don't make love, they FUCK). The sets are surreal and the music appropriate, although maybe a little too conservative for the tone of the movie (everything is in 4/4, but sometimes people fuck in 7/8 or 5/4). The actors are perfect. Beautiful stylish young women and handsome powerful men. The cinematography by Eon McKai works very well. The cuts are frequent and effective and the lighting is flawless. The sex scenes are intense and the actors waste no time getting down to business.

I have grown very used to a more Japanese style of adult video where it is not unusual to film a woman talking about herself for 30 minutes and from then, from 30 minutes in, she begins to slooowly undress. The American style seems much more rapid and "rough." I am not saying that one is better than the other, it is simply interesting to note the difference. I think everyone is naked within 20 seconds of the scene's start.

The actual dialogues are short but upon second viewing work very well. Any more talking would be unnecessary.

Overall, I give this film a 9 out of 10. From a musician's standpoint, it would have been great for the audial direction of the film to move away from standard sounding "techno" beats and to explore something more surreal and risky (psychadelic free jazz would have fit very well with this film). But, with that said, the acting, the sex, the art direction and the shots are all masterfully executed.

Vena Virago and crew, I look forward to seeing more.

Stoned Soul Picnic Vol. 16 and Other News

I will be performing with a ton of Japanese artists in Ebisu at MILK on September 10th.

People are really enjoying the "Dragonsex Nightmare" video.

Thank you to everyone for watching and listening.

I am currently rehearsing for the Sept. 10th set. Most recently, I did a DJ set of Johnny Unicorn's material called, "DJ LapUnicorn: Tales of a Lapdancing Unicorn." An interesting tour would be: Friend/Johnny Unicorn/Lapdancer. This may happen at some point in the near future.

Be careful about touring Japan, though. Unless you sell tickets, good way to lose a lot of money quickly.

Spent the evening working on music for film and tried some canned oxygen (fruit flavor). I had the intention of finishing the GUT podcast project tonight, but time always goes by so quickly when working on music, plus my energy level is low this evening.

I did watch a bit of Eon McKai's "Neu Wave Hookers" and was really impressed. From what I saw, McKai has done a great job recapturing the grit and "nu-wave" spirit of the original but with a fresh cast and interesting music. The art director is Vena Varago. I can't wait to see it in it's entirety.

I still need to finish that Jess Franco film. Last night, I put it in again, but fell asleep. It is very interesting, but I was very tired.

Blue Rita

undefined

I started watching the Jess Franco film "Blue Rita" last night. I will finish it tonight. I was very surprised at the beautiful colors, the hypnotic jazz music and the modern sets. So far, the film is campy, but enjoyable. A man has been kidnapped and a gang of sexy evil women are trying to get him to sign over 200,000 dollars. They pour this green liquid over his body that causes him to be uber-horny, but he can barely reach his hands thru the bars to grope the kidnappers. Funny. So far, I recommend the film based on the visuals alone.

A nice picture of me from yesterday's performance.

There are many, many more. Binspark is a tiny, yet very cozy and intimate venue in the Nishi-Ogikubo area of Tokyo (very close to the infamous Koenji area). Ate dinner at a Pakistani restaurant (loved the chicken/cashew salad). The opening act, Leeben Quiz were very straight-up rock and, at times, reminded me of Led Zeppelin. The drummer/bassist were tight and powerful and the singer/guitarist was very commanding. Despite my wandering in and out of the venue during their set, I enjoyed what I heard.

Before the performance, I drank a Mountain Dew (in a bottle!) and a Red Bull. Why? wakaranai. Friends of mine came just as I was setting up, including a photographer, who took many pics (will be uploaded soon). I played a variation of the as-of-yet unreleased "Electroanal Soundporn" material. That is, I started with a mangled version of my remix of Cokiyu's Org track blended with a Japanese children's song (Oyasumi, Mama mou nemutakute...). That drifted into a brutal rendering of "Kuroshiku Onna," featuring black metal howls from hell melding into pulsating horror movie-inspired shrieks and moans. Next, I broke it down with some "Sniff Stain Attack" trickery and brought it up again with a "Satanic" version of "Cellonic Physiology." Finally, a brief cover of Bonnie "Prince" Billy's, "No More Workhorse Blues," although I ended up only using a looped bass riff, which worked very well with some final unholy incantations.

The faces in the crowd were priceless. Somewhere between "what the fuck is this?" and "he's going to fucking kill me."

Ah yes, prior to the show, I wore a new shirt, which I designed (hand painted for the show). It is a typical white button up "business" shirt, splatted heavily with red and black paint. I had many compliments on it and one offer to sell it.

Olam followed me and I'll tell you now, they were extremely impressive and engaging. Olam consists of a bassist, a drummer and a trumpeter. A keen and intelligent mixture between speed jazz/free jazz/Zeuhl/film soundtracks and Miles Davis. My friends and I were so impressed. Olam released a new CD. Please buy it. Trust me, it is worth it.

Now, it is morning and my girlfriend is sick (from the noise, perhaps). I have to play doctor now.

RAIN in my SHOW

My show is tonight at Binspark. It is raining and I have to prepare merchandise.
Watched the original "Night of the Living Dead" last night. I believe that the day Cannibal Network started filming "Meat Salad," we watched the first 20 minutes of "Night of the Living Dead." I would like to create another movie. Soon, I will start scoring the film, "Drug of Choice."

Posted ELECTROANAL SOUNDPORN on the Myspace page. It is a 4 minute excerpt from my Thursday rehearsal. I played the rehearsal for my girlfriend and she said it sounded like Lil Markie. Well, I disagree, but...

The pic is of Liz Vicous. The rehearsal for Saturday's show was beyond my expectations. I recorded it on MiniDisc and am listening to it again. I changed some of my source material, which really loosened me up and added new surprising sound combinations. Overall, yes, it is impressive to me. Thomas will be selling my merchandise given that he knows nothing about noise. If you make it down to Binspark on Saturday, make sure to assault him with all of your general noise inquiries. Otherwise, hot as hell here in Japan. I have 2 new project ideas.

1. Lapdancer and the Return of the Wedding Reception Vixens
2. This is my great goal. Change "Read" to "listen to" and "writes" to "creates":

"I read him with the shipwrecked feeling I get from anything he writes. At first you follow, then you start going in circles, then you are caught up in a kind of mild unmenacing whirpool, and you tell yourself you're sinking, and then you do sink. But you don't really drown--that would be too easy! You come back up to the surface, you follow all over again, amazed to see he seems to be saying something and to understand what it is, and then you start going round and round again, and you sink once more....All of which is meant to be profound, and seems so. But once you come to your senses you realize it's only abstruse, obscure, and that the distance between profundity and the willed kind is as great as between a revelation and a whim." (from E.M. That song should be on repeat all the time. One of the greatest songs ever written. My head full of plans today, a few of which were realized by evening time. New set uploaded to the music page and a new AsvA mix (12 minutes of pure absurdity). Early evening stalled and lethargy sank me deeply into my chair. Recently, disappointed by my lack of money. Adjusting to having no yen, but looking forward to Friday and Saturday. Preparation for Gut remix project. Contemplating approach. Organizing merchandise for my salesman. Almost don't want to part with the old Lapdancer material. Recently, focusing on digital download project. Soon, several new releases on small D.I.Y. labels. Receiving a package full of handmade recordings is a special feeling. Now, cooler and black tea. Bedtime rituals.

Phlegm

I woke up last night around 4am, phlegm cough. Dreamt about the telephone. More private time rituals this morning and birds chirping outside my window. Coffee/Toast breakfast and much work to be done this evening. Today is a purple shirt and pink tie.

Contemplating and reflecting on last night's set, oddly satisfied but something is lacking. Tonight, another spin, another round. Approaching the problem from a different angle, my point of view. Fell asleep to Jamie Lidell's "Multiply." Beautiful production, drum sound and the mix is enviously engaging.

Mastering of AsvA material is painstaking. Precisicion and volume control need work. Also, more...more...more.

Set of "Anarumaki" continues to follow the private time format of togetherness/separteness, slow frame progression. Each set has a similar rhythm. Impressed by the clarity of the shots, the everydayness, the reality of the settings and the exhibitionist nature of the pose (locations as well). Same models in different contexts, blended with new models. Photographer is faceless.

Moonlight

Rehearsed for Binspark this evening, wrapping microphone cable tightly around microphone. Sound was delicious. Listened closely to Sensational Meets Kouhei and to new Asva material. Impressed with the clarity of the new Sensational. Surely, something to study. Spent the morning saving files from private time and drinking black coffee. The rain was heavy today. Tsuyudayone. Read from Wilhelm Reich while drinking more coffee. My stomach must be one big black pit of caffiene. Wrapping up this evening by checking out Dave Naz's blog. What a wonderful artist. I need to see more of his work. 1 week until concert. 4 weeks until the United States.
